Prepare Your Property for Bushfire Season

With warmer weather approaching, the Shire is reminding property owners and occupiers to prepare for the coming bushfire season to ensure their properties comply with the 2026–27 Bushfire Notice by Sunday, 15 November 2026.

A key requirement for many properties is installing and maintaining Fire Access Tracks, commonly referred to as firebreaks. Where required, these tracks must be at least 2.5 metres wide with a minimum vertical clearance of 4 metres and located inside and as close as practically possible to property boundaries.

Now is the time to check existing firebreaks and make sure they are clear and accessible. Winter growth, overhanging branches and other vegetation can quickly reduce the width and height of access tracks.

Preparing the area around your home and other buildings is also important. Property owners should take this opportunity to manage grass and vegetation, remove accumulated leaves and combustible material, trim vegetation and move unnecessary flammable items at least 20 metres away from buildings. These measures reduce fuel around buildings and improve access for firefighters and emergency vehicles in the event of a bushfire.

Requirements can vary depending on the size and location of your property, so property owners should read the Bushfire Notice carefully and understand the requirements that apply to their land.

All properties must comply by Sunday, 15 November 2026. Shire inspections will commence from this date. Properties must continue to be maintained to the required standard through to Tuesday, 27 April 2027.

Do not leave preparation until the last minute. Prepare your property now by checking your firebreaks and clearing the area around your buildings.
