Native Plant Subsidy and Backyard Tree Planting Program

The Native Plant Subsidy and Backyard Tree Planting Program is a small-scale, place-based initiative to increase native vegetation cover and shade canopy across the Shire of Boddington through voluntary participation by landholders and residents.

The Shire of Boddington has experienced significant native vegetation loss over time due to historical land clearing, agricultural activity and large-scale mining operations. This reduction in vegetation has contributed to habitat fragmentation, biodiversity decline, increased land degradation, reduced landscape resilience and limited urban shade canopy within the townsite.

To support local revegetation and improve environmental outcomes, the Shire is delivering a two-stream pilot program.

Stream 1 – Native Plant Subsidy Program (Large Landholders)

The Native Plant Subsidy Program supports rural and rural-residential landholders within the Shire of Boddington to undertake revegetation on private property using locally appropriate native species.

Landholders with properties 2,000 sqm or larger can apply to receive a tray of native plants supplied as forestry tubestock (64 plants per tray) at a subsidised cost of $25 per tray.

The selected species have been assessed for suitability to local soil types and growing conditions.

What you need for Stream 1

  • Have a property where planting will occur within the Shire of Boddington.
  • Have a minimum property size of 2,000 sqm
  • Submit an EOI application

This stream operates through an Expression of Interest (EOI) process. Complete the online EOI Application Form here, or download a form here. All downloaded forms must be completed and submitted by email to shire@boddington.wa.gov.au or in person at the Shire of Boddington Administration, by 4:00 pm on Friday, 27 March 2026.

What you receive under Stream 1

One tray with 64 plants per property at a subsidised cost of $25.00

If you do not have the capacity to plant all 64 plants, you can share plants with other property owners within the Shire.

Stream 1 – Important Dates

EOI Application Open 16 March 2026
EOI Application Close 27 March 2026
Application Assessment 1–2 weeks following EOI close
Plant Collection Second week of April 2026

Successful applicants will receive confirmation with plant collection details.

Stream 2 – Backyard Tree Planting Program (Households)

The Backyard Tree Planting Program supports households within the Shire of Boddington to increase shade canopy and urban greenery within residential areas.

Under this stream, the Shire will provide one to two native trees per household at no cost, available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Residents can plant these trees within front yards or backyards, provided the location is suitable for long-term tree growth.

What you need for Stream 2

To participate, applicants must:

  • Have a property within the Shire of Boddington
  • Have a suitable location within their property to plant a tree

Stream 2 – Plant Collection

Plant collection for the Backyard Tree Planting Program will occur during the third week of April 2026 from the Boddington Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (50 Johnstone St, Boddington, WA 6390).
