South32 Worsley Alumina has submitted a request to extend the closure of Morts Road until 30 April 2029, along with support for a proposed road realignment. South32 is now proposing to transport ore by conveyor rather than by trucks. This change is expected to reduce noise and dust associated with haul road movements.
A realignment of Morts Road is being considered as part of this proposal. If approved, the realignment would:
- Separate the public road from the proposed conveyor corridor.
- Remove the need for an underpass and overpass, the conveyor would otherwise cross the road twice.
- Eliminate an existing 90-degree bend, potentially improving long-term road safety and alignment.
The Shire is seeking feedback from the community as this constitutes a material change to the previous reopening timeline.
