About 250 members of the public comprising secondary school students, TAFE students, home school community and resident based in the Peel and Wheatbelt regions descended to Boddington on Friday 24 March for the Boddington Careers Expo. Proudly delivered by the Shire of Boddington and Newmont Boddington Gold, the event connected students and job seekers with local and regional employers, as well as further education providers.

The indoor multipurpose courts at Boddington Recreation Centre were transformed and featured over 35 stalls where employers and further education providers connected with participants to distribute resources, provide training and career pathway advice. Students representing communities including Boddington, Narrogin, Wagin and Collie were chaperoned in small groups to foster meaningful conversations and connections with stallholders. The interactive displays proved popular with young people taking up the chance to climb scaffolding and participate in truck simulations which emulate real working scenarios.

In addition to employers and further education providers, there were also a number of stalls dedicated to building the capacity of young people to apply for a job, including resume support and assistance, as well as the process for obtaining a learner’s permit and driver’s license.

The event was an important opportunity to showcase the opportunities available from the region and challenge the perception that moving to the Perth Metropolitan Area is required to achieve their future aspirations.
