The Shire of Boddington has approved a proposal from South32 Worsley Alumina to realign, widen, and upgrade a section of Morts Road, with the road now set to reopen to the public by Thursday, 15 April 2027.
At the July 2025 meeting, Council resolved to support the realignment of the road, which will remove two sharp 90-degree bends at its northern end. This change aims to significantly improve road safety and ease of maintenance, benefiting both locals and visitors - particularly those accessing the Tullis Bridge recreational area.
Morts Road was originally scheduled to reopen by Wednesday, 1 April 2026, following its closure in late 2024 to allow for nearby mining activities. During the finalisation of engineering designs, it became evident that the existing road reserve was too narrow to meet the higher safety and design standards set by Council. To deliver a safer and more durable road, South32 offered to cede land from its adjoining properties to widen the road reserve at no cost to the Shire, as well as improve the alignment.
The realignment and road widening process requires formal subdivision and dedication of the land under the Planning and Development Act 2005. This process involves applications to the Western Australian Planning Commission and other government agencies, expected to take approximately 12 months.
Given these additional steps, Council has agreed to extend the project timeline by a further year, to April 2027, allowing the road to be rebuilt to the preferred standard.
