Council has endorsed the next steps to strengthen Boddington’s long-term financial resilience and help preserve the services, facilities and community benefits that residents currently enjoy.
Mining has played a major role in supporting Boddington’s economy, local services, infrastructure and community facilities. While mining operations are expected to continue for some time, they are finite. Council is planning early so the district is better prepared for the future, when mining activity eventually reduces.
At the May Council meeting, Council supported a two-stream approach, progressing the proposed Boddington Future Fund and establishing a Council controlled Financial Resilience Reserve.
Together, these initiatives are intended to help convert the benefits of today’s mining activity into long-term value for the community. The aim is to reduce the risk of future service decline, protect important community facilities, support local wellbeing and ensure Boddington remains a strong and liveable Shire for future generations.
The Boddington Future Fund is to be developed as an independent community charity, with the ability to receive contributions from industry, local businesses, residents, philanthropic organisations and other partners, and invest those funds for long-term community benefit. Over time, the fund could support local priorities such as youth, community infrastructure, essential worker housing, aged care, and other initiatives that strengthen Boddington’s future.
The fund will be governed independently by a community board and operate under the oversight of the Australian Charities and Not for profits Commission.
Council also endorsed the establishment of a separate Financial Resilience Reserve. This reserve will remain under Council control and will help the Shire plan for future changes to mining related revenue. It will support responsible long-term financial planning and help Council manage the transition to a different revenue base while seeking to maintain service continuity for the community.
The two initiatives have different purposes, but both are focused on the same long-term goal, ensuring Boddington is financially resilient and able to preserve valued community services and facilities into the future.
The next step will be to establish a stakeholder working group to help progress the formation of the Boddington Future Fund. Council will receive a further report on the outcomes of the formation process, including proposed governance arrangements, before any formal endorsement of the community charity structure.
