The official opening of the Yarning Circle was celebrated on Thursday, 9 July 2026. This marked an important milestone in the creation of a welcoming space dedicated to connection, storytelling, reflection and cultural learning.
Designed as a place where community members, visitors and future generations can come together, the Yarning Circle provides opportunities to share stories, build relationships and learn from one another. The space acknowledges the significance of local Aboriginal culture, history and knowledge, while encouraging meaningful conversations and deeper connections across the wider community.
More than 60 community members attended to recognise the importance of the Yarning Circle and celebrate the collaborative efforts that brought the project to life.
Deputy Shire President Paul Carrotts opened the event, followed by a Welcome to Country delivered by Debbie Thorne, Chair of the Aboriginal Reference Group. Wayne Ninyette led a smoking ceremony, and community members were invited to share stories and reflect on the significance of the space.
The Shire acknowledged the valuable contribution of the Aboriginal Reference Group, whose knowledge, guidance and support were instrumental throughout the planning, design and delivery of the project.
The Yarning Circle project was initiated by Elder Greg Thorn, whose vision was to restore the songline of the area. Speaking previously about the project, Greg said:
“By bringing back the songline it can once again take its rightful place in our shared living history. It can be sung upon and walked on into our shared future. This song line can connect us back to looking after country, to looking after the health of the river, to looking after the flora and fauna of this place.”
The Yarning Circle will continue to serve as a place for community gatherings, cultural activities, education and reflection, creating opportunities for people of all ages to connect, yarn and share.
The Shire of Boddington extends its sincere appreciation to South32 Worsley Alumina for funding the Yarning Circle project and helping bring this important community initiative to life.
