The Shire recently received a request to consider allocating a Noongar name to the park located on Christie Street, Ranford.
The proposed name is ‘Kooloongar (Childrens) Park’, aligning with the use of the land and recognising the strong Aboriginal connection to this location.
The focus on this Reserve in Ranford has increased over the last year, due to the installation of a playground at the end of Christie Street.
Increasing focus and recognition of Traditional Custodians of the land is identified within the Council Plan, with a Policy that provides guidance in the assessment of proposals recently being adopted by Council. The proposed name meets the requirements of the Policy, by recognising Aboriginal culture through use of the local Noongar language, and with the suggested name being relevant to the use of the land.
There are a number of spelling variations on the Noongar word for ‘children’, and this version is thought to most closely represent the local dialect.
Comment is now invited from the community in relation to this proposal.
