Extended Trading Hours Survey
The Shire of Boddington is undertaking community consultation to determine the level of support in the community for extending trading hours for general retail businesses.
Retail trading hours provide times when retailers in Western Australia can open for business. All shops are regarded as general retail shops unless they fall under any one of the other categories including: small retail shops, special retail shops, filling - service stations or motor vehicle shops. In some cases the type of business can determine the hours which the business can be open to customers. For example:
- Small retail shops can trade 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
- Special retail shops are considered necessary for emergency, convenience or recreation goods. Shops in this category can trade between 6.00am to 11.30pm every day of the year.
Currently there are retail businesses within Boddington which don’t fit either these two categories, so they are classified as a general retail shop and restricted to trading within the following timeframes:
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday
|
8am – 6pm
|
Thursday

8am – 9pm
|
Saturday

This consultation sets to understand the retail needs and expectations of the local community as well as measure the level of economic leakage taking place to nearby retail centres. While the data collected will determine the level of support in the community for extending trading hours for general retail businesses, this process will also clarify local perceptions in servicing the purchasing needs and expectations of visitors, as well as assist the Shire to implement economic development projects and initiatives to support local businesses.
The outcomes of the survey will help determine subsequent steps taken. This may include submitting an application to the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety - Consumer Protection Division (DMIRS) to consider extending trading hours within the Shire of Boddington, or maintaining the current trading hours for general retail businesses.
