Industry
The Shire of Boddington is rich in natural resources, as evidenced by the diversity of industry that operates within its boundaries. Home to mining operations and a variety of rural and agricultural pursuits Boddington is proud of the employment opportunities that exist for its residents and neighbouring shires.
Mining
Two mines are located within the Shire. The Boddington Gold Mine and Worsley Bauxite Mine. The mining industry is relatively new to Boddington with the Bauxite Mine beginning operations in the late 1970's and gold mining operations beginning in the mid 1980's.
The Boddington Gold Mine ceased operations towards the end of 2001 and has been limited to exploration, rehabilitation, decommissioning of plant and general care and maintenance until the recent announcement of the Boddington Gold Mine Expansion.
In March 2006 the Joint Venture parties of the Boddington Gold Mine, Newmont Pty Ltd and Anglo Gold Pty Ltd announced that the Boddington Gold Mine Expansion will proceed as there is still estimated to be 15-20 million ounces of gold remaining. Currently they are in the early stages of building a construction camp to house employees/contractors for the estimated 18 month - 2 year construction phase.
Further information regarding the expansion can be obtained from the Boddigton Gold Mine website http://www.bgm.com.au or by calling 1800 770 276.
Bauxite mining appears to have a healthy future in Boddington with an estimated 50 years of productive mining remaining. The bauxite ore is transferred to Collie via a cable driven overland conveyor belt for processing.
Rural and Agricultural
The Boddington townsite serves as a strong centre for surrounding broad acre mixed grain, livestock and other agricultural pursuits.
The Shire is home to various agricultural industry such as sheep, cattle, cereal crops, timber industry, pine plantations, bluegum plantations, viticulture and orchards.
Other Industry
The Shire is experiencing an increased demand for lifestyle and hobby farm subdivisions adding a new dimension to our culture.
Several Bed and Breakfasts along with Farm Stays now operate within easy reach of town facilities.
Other businesses involved in aquaculture developments are now beginning to emerge with Boddington being perfectly located between the metropolitan area and Mandurah for potential marketing opportunities.
